Lesson 1.5
Query fan-out: one question can lead to related searches
Published . Sources checked .
Google defines query fan-out as a set of concurrent, related queries generated to gather more information for one user question. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it across subtopics and data sources. Evidence: Documented by Google
What we know—and what we do not
Google’s documentation gives a lawn-care example, but it does not reveal the exact queries it made for a real search. We therefore cannot say Google made five queries, name its hidden subqueries, or explain an individual citation with fan-out alone. Those details are unknown.
Other systems document related query rewriting. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search typically rewrites a request into one or more targeted queries and may search again after reviewing initial results. Microsoft documents Bing queries derived from terms in a Copilot prompt. These are platform-specific facts. Evidence: Documented by OpenAI Evidence: Documented by Microsoft
The SEO implication
Model related questions to make a resource more useful, not to publish a thin page for every query variation. Google warns that creating pages for every possible query variation primarily to manipulate results violates its scaled content-abuse policy. Evidence: Documented by Google
Use this lesson
Use related questions to improve one useful resource: identify what a reader needs to understand, then answer it where it belongs. Keep your list labelled as a content-planning hypothesis. Do not manufacture separate pages for every possible wording.
